SACP Gauteng Holds a Successful Hands Off Venezuela Solidarity Rally
14 June 2015

The South African Communist Party (SACP) Gauteng Province held a successful `Hands off Venezuela` international solidarity rally today. The rally was attended by hundreds of our members and representatives of the ANC-led alliance partners the ANC, COSATU, SANCO as well as the Young Communist League (YCL). The alliance partners Provincial Secretaries delivered messages in support of the struggle of the people of Venezuela.

In addressing the rally, the Venezuela Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Comrade Reinaldo Bolivar thanked the SACP and the people of South Africa for the support it has received. He also called for the promotion of "strong ties of solidarity between the people of our two countries. He led a delegation consisting of the Ambassador of Venezuela to South Africa, Comrade Mairin Moreno and the Ambassador of Venezuela to the African Union Comrade Comrade Luis Joubert. Several locally based Venezuelan nationals were present.

Comrade Solly Mapaila, the SACP 2nd Deputy General Secretary addressed the rally on behalf of the South African Communist Party 13th Congress Central Committee. He reminded the rally that the late President Hugo Chavez is one of the four recipients of the SACP highest honour, the Chris Hani Peace Award. The late President Chavez was preceded by Nelson Mandela, Walter Sisulu and Fidel Castro as a recipient of the award.

The Provincial Secretary Comrade Jacob Mamabolo said the Gauteng province will deepen the party`s struggle against imperialism and its aggression, in defence of the sovereignty of Venezuela and as part of our national democratic revolution and the struggle for socialism.

The rally comes a day after a demonstration of the SACP at the US Consulate in Sandton, Johannesburg, to call for the 9 March executive order of President Obama against Venezuela to be rescinded. The rally condemned the failure by US representatives at the Consulate to accept its memorandum of demands.

The SACP also used the occasion to remember its late stalwart and Central Committee member Comrade Judy Malqueeny who passed on after a struggle with cancer. A moment of silence was observed in her honour for the contributions she made to the struggle for peace, democracy and socialism.
