Sudan Releases Results of Labour Market

Najat Ahmed

Khartoum – The Ministry of Labour announced the results of the international project for survey of labour market in Sudan. Minister of Labour and Human Resources, Ms Ishraqa Sayid Ahmed said Sudan implemented the project in a short span of time through several experts and groups and lauded the role of the Central Bureau of statistics which provided a great deal of information.

She said the project provides the government with all kinds of information about the market and that will assist it in planning, devising strategies and conducting studies.

She added that the percentage of strength of labour in Sudan increased to 9.3 million compared to 3.1 million in 2009, an indication of an increase in Sudan's economy.

Speaking at press conference, she said the percentage of males in the labour market stands at 51% and females 17% but the report did not include housewives.

The percentage of child labour in the labour market in the Sudan is not alarming compared to other countries, she said.

The Minister underlined the development in the industrial labour, stating that the decline in the agricultural sector did not give a fillip to the industrial sector. The percentage of workers in trade and services increased and this negatively impacted the economic sector. She called on the state to exert efforts during the forthcoming stage to address the situation.

The Minister said the percentage of unemployment among the youth reached 18.8 compared to the last survey which was 16.4%.
