NEGOTIATORS from Zimbabwe and Britain met yesterday in London as part of efforts to normalise relations between the two countries. The meeting that also involved representatives from countries that have been hostile to Zimbabwe including Canada, United States of America, Australia and some members of the EU was still going on late last night.

The meeting was called by British Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, Mr Mark Simmonds.

Zimbabwe was represented by Justice and Legal Affairs Minister Patrick Chinamasa, Regional Integration and International Co-operation Minister Priscilla Misihairabwi-Mushonga and Energy and Power Development Minister Elton Mangoma.

The sincerity of the British was called into question over the weekend after a 10-point Communiqué titled “Friends of Zimbabwe, 2013 Draft Communiqué” was leaked to the media before the meeting had even been held.

The communique also exposed Britain’s intentions to gate-crash observation of forthcoming harmonised elections despite Zimbabwe’s decision to bar countries that have imposed illegal sanctions on the country from any involvement in the polls.
