African Media should broadcast Development Oriented Issues

Information and Communication Assistant Minister, Koigi Wamwere is challenging the media in Africa to play a more active role as a driving force for Unity and Development.

Speaking during the launch of the 1st General Assembly of the African Union of Broadcasting (AUB) held in Nairobi, Koigi said that African nations face common problems including HIV/AIDS, corruption, tribalism, dictatorship and bribery, which can be addressed more effectively through the media.

For the last four days Chief Executives from different Media Broadcasting Companies in Africa have been deliberating on various issues affecting their profession and how they can forge a common front in addressing the problems.

The session saw the once famous Pan-African Broadcasting, Union of National Radio and Television Organization of Africa-URTNA transformed into the African Union of Broadcasting (AUB).

The President of the New Broadcasting Union, Ben Egbuna says the organization will provide programmes set to enrich the quality of life of viewers and project the true image of Africa

KBC Channel One's Managing Director, David Waweru welcomed the initiative saying it provides a common platform to tackle Africa's concerns and improve the lives of all Africans.

The meeting ends on Friday with the executives charting the way forward on the operations of their new broadcasting union including the location of its headquarters.
